I got in 2 stands this morning before finishing up and heading home. On the first stand I had my 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun, Wildlife Technologies electronic call and MOJO decoy. And on the second stand I had my AR 15 rifle, Wildlife Technologies electronic call, portable hunting chair, shooting sticks and MOJO decoy.
On the first stand I started the call sequence with intermittent rabbit distress. It was about 3 minutes in when I had a coyote come in and stop broadside 30 yards in front of me. To my surprise I missed the coyote with the first shot. And I also missed with the second shot as it was running into the cover. All the way back to the truck I was thinking how I could have missed that coyote. I don’t miss stationary coyotes in range with my shotgun unless my sight had lost zero. So when I got back to the truck I attached a paper target to a fence and paced off 30 yards to shoot at the target. As you can see from the picture of the target, the sight was fine. The only thing I think I did wrong was to pull up anticipating the kick of the 3 ½ magnum shells. If I pulled up I probably shot over the top of the coyote.
The call sequence for the second stand was continuous rabbit, deer and coyote pup distress. About 15 minutes into the stand while playing mule deer fawn distress I had 5 or 6 mule deer does and a couple fawns come in. They weren’t as aggressive as the ones from yesterday and only stayed around for about 5 minutes. After they left I switched to coyote pup distress which I played for about 5 minutes. I did see or hear anything else other than the deer.
